INT410005 – Tópicos Especiais: Groundwater Pollution and Protection/Poluição e proteção de águas subterrâneas

Nome Tópicos Especiais: Groundwater Pollution and Protection/Poluição e proteção de  águas subterrâneas
Código INT410005
Ementa This interdisciplinary subject deals with understanding of physical and chemical processes
affecting groundwater pollution. The processes may be of natural and human-induced origin
and they include interactions between water, solids and gases. The strategies for groundwater
protection are discussed.
The specific subjects of the course include:
• the principles of water flux and pollution transport in the subsurface,
• porous media as a natural filter,
• the impact of nitrogen application, its cycling and transformation,
• the acid-mine drainage and associated metal mobilisation,
• landfill leachate and its impact on the environment,
• seawater intrusion to aquifers, and
• carbon sequestration in soil and groundwater.
By the end of the course students will be capable of:
1. planning a study to evaluate water and soil contamination,
2. interpreting the quality of water and influence of anthropogenic pollution, and
3. managing systems to prevent pollution and planning remediation schemes.
